Sketchy Bongo Songs: Sketchy Bongo is the masked alter ego of DJ/producer Yuvir Pillay, who hails from the eastern South African city of Durban and has developed a unique sound rooted in pop, hip-hop, and house music. Pillay, who was born in 1989, began creating hip-hop at the age of 13 and worked with renowned rappers Skwatta Kamp and Pro Kid before graduating from high school.

Early Kanye West and The Neptunes influences may be heard on the persistent, elastic percussion of “Sniff Sniff” and “Paul Walker,” both from his 2015 Revival EP. He later established himself in hedonistic EDM with the soaring club smash “On Fire” and the Afrobeat-infused “Melody.”

Sketchy Bongo’s 2016 single “Let You Know,” featuring soul vocalist Shekhinah, became a huge hit, earning the producer a record deal with dance juggernauts Ultra Music. Building community has been a trademark of Pillay’s career, as he routinely respects his history while also highlighting new talent as a member of The Wolfpack collective.
